lesson learned

This morning I came downstairs to find Jordan
sitting on the couch playing DS.
This is usual Wednesday morning routine.
I lay around in bed a bit longer while he watches
a show or plays DS.
He then says look mom my 3DS.
Wait a minute that is supposed to be wrapped under the tree.
I then look over to the tree to see a small
pile of wrapping paper and presents.

Honestly I was in shock.
Neither of the kids have ever done this before.
I didn't know what to say
or what discipline action to take.
I was really disappointed that we wouldn't
have that excitement for Christmas morning
watching him open his gifts.

Now Jordan is somewhat of a sensitive child.
He hates Josh and or I being mad at him.
So I used this to my advantage and went on
to tell how disappointed I was that he had done that.
I told him mommy and daddy were really sad
because we didn't get to seem open his gifts.
He stared bawling.
I sat on the couch with him and talked about it.
He said he was sorry and that he felt bad.
I told him if he ever did this again that next time it would be a spank.
I could tell that he was genuinely felt bad.
I told him he would have to tell daddy sorry when he got home.
He then asked if he could call daddy now.
We called through face time and he broke down again
crying.  He finally got out I am sorry.
Hopefully he learned his lesson.

I am curious to know if this has happened to anyone else?
How did you handle it?
What sort of discipline did you take?

  1. You did good! Just wrap them back up, he can open it up again on Christmas. Lesson learned. He did not seem to have any naughtiness in mind, just did not THINK. After all he IS a boy! He did not try to hide it or anything. He has said every day, "I wish TODAY was Christmas!" So maybe seeing the gifts, he thought it WAS!
    :) Good job mom.
